Name: Richard Tramm
Residence: Cut and Shoot, Texas
Best Race ever: Ironman Texas 2017 – This was my sixth Ironman race but the first time I was able to stay on my plan all the way through the race. My swim was a bit slower than I expected, though still an IM PR, but I smashed through past best times on the bike and run for a new race PR by more than an hour with a 12:12 finish.
Favorite Race and why: Marine Corps Marathon – As a former Marine, the long past desire to run this race motivated me to start running and lose weight after I turned 40. I have now run the MCM twice and it’s a great course mixed with hills and flats, has country and urban areas, passes many of our nation’s most important monuments and has the greatest support I have seen in a race (not to mention a great uphill ending charging up a hill to the Marine Corps War Memorial)
Toughest workout: 4 x 1000 swim (with a negative split) I am far from the biggest fan of swimming but enjoy the mental and physical challenge of this workout when I am in the right mindset during Ironman training.
Proudest accomplishment as an athlete: Learning and accepting that I had become an example to others that it is possible to work hard and succeed at overcoming your problems in sport and life after overcoming two different sets of health issues and also cutting almost 4 1/2 hours off my Ironman finish time from my first through most recent IMTX.
Favorite food: When I’m in training its scrambled eggs with tomato, cheese and bacon cooked into them and avocado slices over the top. When I’m not in training anything with ice cream or chocolate (or both!).
